JVC GY-HMQ10 4K Camcorder

The GY-HMQ10 functions as an exceptional HD camcorder thanks to its larger 4K imager and superb optics. It records full HD (1920 x 1080) at 50/60p or 50/60i onto a single memory card in the AVCHD format.

Great images begin with a great optical system. The GY-HMQ10 employs a razor sharp F2.8 10x zoom lens specifically designed for 4K imaging. A high speed 1/2-inch class CMOS device with 8.3 million active pixels (3840 x 2160) captures live progressive images at up to 60 frames per second. This tremendous amount of data is then processed using an array of custom JVC Falconbrid LSI chips that deBayer the image and provide a live 4K output while simultaneously compressing video for recording onto separate solid state memory cards. 4K recordings up to 2 hours in length can be made using four 32GB SDHC cards.

Operation and form factor are very similar to JVC's popular GY-HM150 with manual or auto control of focus, iris, gain, shutter, gamma level, color matrix, and white balance.

Falconbrid is JVC's high-speed processor developed for advanced video applications and utilized in the GY-HMQ10. 40nm processing is incorporated into a single chip, offering high performance and low energy-consumption with an economical design. Raw image data from the camera's CMOS device is de-matrixed (deBayered) in real time and processed to provide the optimum image parameters. Unlike many high end 4K cameras, the GY-HMQ10 is able to output 4K images to a monitor or projection system in real time with virtually no latency. For recording, another Falconbrid processor handles H.264 encoding and formating into the required MPEG4 format. Multiple Falconbrid processors are used in the GY-HMQ10.

The GY-HMQ10 employs a single 1/2.3-inch CMOS device that provides 3840 x 2160 images—4 times (2H x 2V) the resolution of full HD cameras and monitors. It provides good sensitivity and excellent performance over a wide range of lighting conditions. Utilization of a single device simplifies the optical design of the camera resulting in more precise images with minimal aberration. Details are crisp and accurate throughout the entire image plane. The 3840 x 2160 (square pixel) image conforms to the same 16:9 aspect ratio used throughout the video industry.

In the 4K mode, the GY-HMQ10 records progressive video at a variable bit rate up to 144 Mbps (36 Mbps X 4) using MPEG-4/H.264 encoding. The image is separated into 4 quadrants, each recorded onto a separate SDHC card. This method allows for the use of economical and widely available SDHC memory cards. When playing back from the camera, all four memory cards are accessed in sync, and output may be either 4K or downconverted to HD. JVC also provides a software utility that combines the four recorded files into a single file compatible with 4K editing systems.

Displaying 4K recordings or live video is ideally performed on a native 4K monitor or projector. JVC and a number of other manufacturers offer such projectors, typically used in theaters and other large screen venues. Recently, some manufacturers have introduced LCD monitors with 3840 x 2160 panels and with inputs for 4K signals. It is expected that more panels such as this will become available in the coming years.

Professional 4K monitors and projectors typically have four inputs, one for each screen quadrant. The GY-HMQ10 connects to these monitors using the 4 HDMI outputs provided on the camcorder.

The 3.5-inch (920,000 pixel) 16:9 aspect ratio Touch LCD monitor provides not only an alternative to the viewfinder when shooting, it also displays a wide array of monitoring and setup indications. Easy to operate, this full screen touch panel and new GUI enable fast and intuitive control.

As mentioned above, the GY-HMQ10 provides a full frame downconverted HD output of its 4K signal via an HDMI interface. One very useful feature of this camera is its ability to output an HD window from a full 4K frame. By pressing the touch screen during playback, a 1920 x 1080 window is created and the camera outputs a full HD frame of that window. The window is movable within the 4K frame with the touch screen interface

The GY-HMQ10 records 2 channels of 16 bit audio sampled at 48Khz. In the 4K recording mode, audio is recorded in the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format. When recording in the HD mode, audio is encoded with the Dolby Digital AC3 codec. Audio levels are controlled manually or automatically using AGC. An audio meter is provided in the LCD and VF displays to facilitate adjustment. Balanced XLR connectors on the handle permit the use of external microphones (optional) and/or a wireless receiver. 48V phantom power is available for each microphone. Versatile input switching allows the microphone signal to be directed to the desired channel. A built-in stereo microphone is also provided for ambient sound pickup

Achieving exact focus with 4K and HD signals is critical. JVC's Focus Assist turns focusing into a fast, easy and accurate process. When Focus Assist is activated, the picture in the viewfinder becomes monochrome and all objects which are in focus appear with colored edges. Focus Assist works equally in the viewfinder as well as on the LCD panel. The Focus Assist function can be assigned to any of the USER buttons.

Four types of HyperGamma curve – inherited from Sony’s CineAlta camcorders – are provided in addition to six standard gammas.

Interval Recording Function

The Interval Recording function intermittently records one frame at pre-determined intervals. This is convenient for shooting over long periods of time, and also when creating special effects with extremely rapid motion.

Frame Recording Function

The Frame Recording function records images for pre-determined frames every time the Record button is pressed. This is particularly useful for clay animation shooting.

Optical ND Filters and Electrical CC Filters

The PMW-500 camcorder comes equipped with optical ND filters and electrical CC filters. With electrical CC filters, users can easily select a colour temperature -3200K, 4300K, 5600K, or 6300K - by rotation using a camcorder-assignable switch.

ATW (Auto Tracing White Balance) and Hold

The Auto Tracing White Balance function automatically adjusts the camera’s colour temperature according to changes in lighting conditions. If required, the user can hold auto tracing at a desired colour balance via an assignable switch.

Proxy Data Recording

At the same time as recording high-resolution video and audio data, a low-resolution version of this AV data (called proxy data) can be recorded on SxS memory card. Proxy data enables amazingly high-speed file transfer and efficient batch editing workflow. (The Proxy Recording function works only in UDF (MXF) mode.)

Eight Assignable Switches

Frequently used functions can be programmed onto eight assignable switches on the PMW-500, allowing operators to make rapid changes when working in the field, convenient for shooting over long periods of time, and also when creating special effects with extremely rapid motion

For journalists, documentary makers and anyone else who needs capture superb content whatever the conditions, the dust and rain-proof HXR-NX70E is the perfect compact camcorder.

In low light conditions, its Exmor R™ CMOS sensor delivers roughly double the sensitivity of conventional CMOS sensors, while an ultra-wide angle 26.3mm Sony G Lens™ lets you capture more of the action in close shooting situations. You can also ‘geo-tag’ your precise location with built-in GPS, while 96 Gigabytes of embedded Flash Memory provides up to 40 hours of storage capacity - ideal when operating in remote locations.

The exceptionally robust NX70 doesn’t sacrifice picture quality however, with CinemaTone technology providing deeper, more film-like skin tones. And if you want precise, hands-on control there’s a switchable lens ring for manual control of focus, iris and zoom functions.

The HXR-NX70 is suitable for producing content for international usage thanks to the latest 50p recording options. It can also shoot still images simultaneously with video using a Dual Rec function, providing complete on location flexibility.

This product comes with the full PrimeSupport package. That’s fast, hassle-free repairs, a helpline offering expert technical advice, and a free loan unit while yours is repaired. Plus the peace of mind that Sony is looking after your equipment – and your business.

Rain and Dust Proof Performance

You can be confident rainy or dusty shooting environments will not affect the reliable operation of the HXR-NX70E thanks to its IEC60529 IP54 rating. The camcorder’s sealed body design makes sure that harmful sand and large dust particles do not get inside. A waterproof performance rating of IPx4 means that the main camera body is protected against rain showers and water splashes.

A waterproof performance rating of IPx4 means that the main camera body is protected against rain showers and water splashes. However, it should not be submerged underwater or sprayed with pressurised water from a tap or hose. When used with accessories such as an external microphone, a rain cover should be used to protect the accessory and connection. IP5x rating does not guarantee 100% protection against exposure to extremely fine particles.

Ultra-wide Angle 26.3mm G lens

Engineered for superior optical performance, Sony G lenses deliver brilliant, accurate colour reproduction and sharp, amazingly detailed images. In addition, the 26.3mm focal length offers a broader perspective than previous lenses for enhanced wide angle shooting so you can capture more of the scene when close in.

Assignable Lens Ring (Focus/Zoom/Iris)

Get the most out of your camcorder with enhanced manual controls. The assignable lens ring allows for manual adjustment of focus, iris, and zoom settings so you have complete creative control.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation with Active Mode

Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation with Active Mode provides superior compensation for camera shake to deliver stunningly smooth video from wide angle to full telephoto shooting. In addition, the innovative 3-Way Shake-Cancelling feature adds electronic roll stability for even smoother video capture.

Back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor for superb low-light video

Journalists rarely shoot under studio lighting conditions and Sony’s back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS sensor delivers stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain. Designed for compact cameras and camcorders, the Exmor R™ sensor relocates the photo diodes above the support circuitry, maximising the light gathering area per pixel so you can shoot with better results in low-light conditions. The sensitivity is roughly double that of conventional CMOS sensors of the same size and pixel size.

1920 x 1080 Full HD 50p Recording with 12.3 Mega pixels still image capture

The compact HXR-NX70E shoots in Full High Definition quality (1920 x 1080) with a choice of 50p, 50i and 25p frame rates. It can also simultaneously shoot 12.3 Mega Pixel (4672 x 2628) still images (Note: Dual Rec is not active when recording mode is set to FX or PS.) It also supports playback via HDMI and compatible HDTV, for complete flexibility in reviewing your footage.

96GB* embedded Flash Memory for up to 40 hours of HD recording

Built-in Flash memory provides extra capacity, ideal when working remotely, as well as providing additional workflow options for back-up and sharing content. 96GB embedded Flash memory can record and store up to 40 hours of high definition video footage in HD LP mode.

* 96GB equals 96 billion bytes. A portion of the total storage is used for system management and/or application files.

3.5” touch-screen XtraFine™ LCD display (921K)

The large 3.5” (16:9) XtraFine LCD screen (921K) displays sharp, bright, vivid images, letting you compose a shot more easily and alter setting to best represent the scene, even when outdoors in bright lighting conditions.

XLR adaptor with selectable phantom power and shotgun microphone

The detachable handle has a compact, ergonomic design. Two balanced XLR audio inputs are built in with phantom power and attenuation options that professional shooters require for clean sound quality. Default audio settings for XLR recording are highlighted in green for easy reference in the field in order to reduce operator error under difficult lighting conditions.

The ECM-XM1 shotgun microphone mounted on top of the handle provides audio recording performance similar to larger shoulder-mounted ENG style cameras.

Geotagging with built-in GPS receiver

A built-in GPS receiver makes the HXR-NX70 an ideal choice for professional videographers. The receiver gives you the ability to “geo-tag” shooting locations - making it easy if you need to return to the same location or to create a log when surveying remote locations. Your locations can be tracked on Google maps and all GPS data can be extracted with a PC.

Additionally, the receiver automatically adjusts your camcorder’s clock to the proper time zone when international travel is part of your assignment.

Direct Copy to external HDD without PC

Store content or backup important shots by copying footage directly from your camcorder to an external hard disk drive (sold separately) without using a computer. The HXR-NX70E can also access videos stored on an external hard drive for playback on HDTV, allowing you to utilise the camcorder’s handy playback features.

Additional information: Direct Copy is compatible with USB media that meets the following requirements: USB 2.0 or higher and formatted in FAT32 file system. It is recommended that external HDD is AC powered. The HXR-NX70E must be connected to AC power when using Direct Copy. VMC-UAM1 cable is supplied to connect HXR-NX70 with USB media, however connection via USB hub is not supported. There may be cases when USB media is not compatible with the Direct Copy function.

The HMC151 features three native 16:9 progressive 1/3" CCD imagers with an Optical Image Stabilisation (O.I.S.) function to ensure stable shooting and a 28mm Leica Dicomar wide-angle zoom lens (35MM equivalent). The HMC151 handheld is capable of both 1080i and 720p recording at 13Mbps, comparable to current HDV compression formats with bit rates of 25Mbps. In addition, an enhanced mode with a higher bit rate is planned to be incorporated into the HMC151 for higher-level use. It supports a full range of HD formats including 1080/60i, 1080/50i, 1080/30p, 1080/25p, 1080/24p native; 720/60p, 720/50p, 720/30p, 720/25p, 720/24p native; and it is 50Hz/59.94Hz switchable.

The Panasonic AG-HMC152 is exactly the same model as the Panasonic AG-HMC151
The HMC152 offers professional HD performance with the simplicity of a digital still camera. Since the solid-state handheld records onto SD and SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) memory cards, professionals can benefit from the reliability and random access of tapeless recording and capitalise on the cost advantages, widespread availability, and growing capacity of standard SD consumer cards. Using the newly announced 32GB SDHC memory card and the camcorder's 6Mbps recording mode, users can acquire up to 12 hours of HD video and audio on a single SD card.

For even more creative flexibility, the NEX-FS100 also enables extended continuous recording and simultaneous recording of HD video footage for instant backup with an HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory Unit. These and other valuable features make this compact, high performance camera ideal for producing everything from low budget commercials, music videos and documentaries to wedding videos.

The NEX-FS100E is supplied without lens so you can choose the optics which best suit your creative requirements. Sony's E-mount interchangeable lenses let you enjoy a level of creative freedom unimaginable with camcorders of the past and optional adaptors enable use of a vast array of lenses from a wide variety of manufacturers.

This product also comes with the full PrimeSupport package. That’s fast, hassle-free repairs, a helpline offering expert technical advice, and a free loan unit while yours is repaired. Plus the peace of mind that Sony is looking after your equipment – and your business.

Exmor™ Super35 CMOS Sensor for Shooting Motion Pictures

Equipped with a large CMOS sensor equivalent in size to Super 35mm film, the NEX-FS100EK enables shooting with the same creative depth of field as the PMW-F3.

The sensor also features the optimum number of effective pixels for shooting HD moving images. At a high 50fps in all-pixel scan mode, this allows images to be captured with less colour aliasing, jaggedness and rolling shutter than DSLR cameras, while providing the sensitivity to shoot at a minimum illumination of 0.28lux*. Another advantage of Exmor™ technology is minimal noise when shooting low-light scenes.

* When using a fixed shutter speed of 1/25, auto gain and an iris setting of F1.4 The SEL18200 lens supplied with the NEX-FS100EK enables shooting in illumination as low as 1.5lux when using a fixed shutter speed of 1/25, auto gain and auto iris

E-Mount Interchangeable Lens System

Sony's E-mount interchangeable lenses let you enjoy a level of creative freedom unimaginable with camcorders of the past. All feature precision-crafted optics with aspherical glass elements for compact high performance, and circular iris mechanisms for smooth background defocusing. Thanks to the E-mount's short 18mm flange-back distance, using a mount adaptor allows shooting with a wide range of existing lenses. For example, with the optional LA-EA1 mount adaptor, you can take advantage of the abundant lenses (A-mount lenses). Third-party adaptors enable use of an even wide variety of lenses.

Modular design for a variety of shooting styles

Featuring a compact, lightweight body with detachable grip, handle, and viewfinder, the NEX-FS100EK is ideal for a wide range of shooting situations.

During hand-held shooting, the angle of the grip can be changed as desired, and recording started and stopped with a button on the grip. Recording start/stop buttons are also provided on the top and lower right of the camera.

There are also 1/4- and 3/8-inch screw holes on both the handle and the bottom of the camera body for mounting various peripheral devices. Plus a tape measure hook and an image sensor position index on the body.

XtraFine LCD panel

Located on the optical axis, the 3.5-inch-type XtraFine™ LCD panel enables easier, more intuitive framing, especially during hand-held shooting. And the LCD panel can be rotated for stress-free operation when shooting low-angle scenes and digital signage footage. For easier, more precise focusing in daylight, the viewfinder comes with a detachable 1.2x magnifier.

1920 x 1080P Slow and Quick Motion

Recording images at a different frame rate from that used for playback provides the extra versatility of slow and quick motion shooting. Furthermore, the NEX-FS100EK enables Full HD (1920 x 1080) progressive slow and quick motion. Frame rates are selectable from among 50fps, 25fps, 12fps, 6fps, 3fps, 2fps and 1fps. So, for example, when recording at 1080/25p, if the frame rate is set to 50fps, images are recorded in 2 times slow motion. This means you can create impressive slow motion scenes without the need for troublesome editing.

Note: Shooting in slow and quick motion is possible during HD recording and in the progressive mode. Simultaneous recording to a memory card and the flash memory unit is not possible.

Hybrid recording

Recording to the directly mountable HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory unit allows continuous recording for over 10 hours without changing the recording medium. Simultaneous recording using memory cards and other media is also possible for secure backup when shooting footage that can't be reshot.

Note: When recording on different media, the resolution must be HD or SD. HD and SD cannot be simultaneously on different media.

NXCAM Recording Format

Like other NXCAM series cameras, the NEX-FS100EK uses the well established AVCHD recording format supported by a wide range of nonlinear editing systems. Better still, it's ready to shoot with a maximum frame rate of 1920 x 1080/50p (28Mbps) for even higher quality recording. For more flexibility, it's also possible to record in Standard Definition MPEG-2 format.

Uncompressed 4:2:2 Output with Embedded Time code

When shooting, the NEX-FS100EK can output uncompressed 4:2:2 footage via HDMI (with an embedded SMPTE Time Code) which can be recorded onto external media, such as HDD.

Geotagging with built-in GPS receiver

A built-in GPS receiver makes the NEX-FS100EK an ideal choice for professional videographers.

Picture Profile™

Six picture profile settings for different shooting conditions are provided as default settings. Selecting a picture profile for a particular scene offers an easy way to creatively change your shoot.

Last Scene Review

Press a single button to immediately review the last recorded scene.

Expanded Focus

Press a button and this enlarges the centre of the displayed image by 2x, a particularly useful feature when making critical focusing adjustments.

Histogram

Onscreen display of a histogram enables easier exposure adjustment. The histogram also shows the point where the zebra pattern appears (the zebra point). This enables confirmation of overall brightness distribution and the brightness level set with the zebra function. As well as preventing overexposure, this is useful as a guide when aiming for optimum exposure of certain parts of an image, such as faces.

Peaking

A peaking function draws a defined line around the subject displayed in the LCD monitor and viewfinder. Peaking sensitivity and colour (red, white, yellow) can be selected to enable more precise focusing.

Markers

Centre, aspect, safety zone, guide frame and other markers can be displayed on the LCD.

Firmware Update

Sony has implemented a firmware update scheme for future functions.

Sony’s Exmor™ Super35 CMOS sensor was designed with the benefit of two decades experience in Digital Cinematography, pioneering digital HD acquisition for feature films and broadcast TV through the legendary CineAlta product range. It brings a true ‘film look’ and superior image quality into reach for independent movies, pop promos, commercials and other applications, as well as making the PMW-F3 an ideal B-camera for high-end feature film production.

The PMW-F3K is supplied with three high quality Sony lenses and an industry standard PL Mount adaptor providing compatibility with industry standard 35mm lenses. (Also available is the lens-less PMW-F3L.)

Exceptional flexibility is a key feature of the F3 along with with multiple workflow options. XDCAM EX’s proven high-speed, intuitive workflow offers seamless integration with leading nonlinear editing software - as standard. In addition, a 10bit 4:2:2 HD-SDI output opens up hybrid recording possibilities with a variety of external recording devices. And from April 2011, a Dual Link HD-SDI option will enable 10bit RGB uncompressed signal output - ideal for the high-end film production.

PrimeSupport

This product comes with PrimeSupport – fast, hassle-free repairs and a helpline offering expert technical advice. Which gives you the peace of mind that Sony is looking after your equipment, and your business.

Exmor™ Super35 CMOS image sensor

The PMW-F3K is equipped with a Super 35mm sensor which is the same size as Super 35mm film and has been specifically developed for digital cinematography. Its positioning within the chassis is exactly the same as it would be within a 35mm film camera – ensuring exactly the same optical performance with the unrivalled range of 35mm Cine lenses.

In addition, Sony's advanced accumulated sensor technologies provide an excellent sensitivity of F11 (ISO 800)* and a remarkable signal-to-noise ratio of just 63 dB*. Unique Exmor™ sensor offers exceptional noise reduction and greatly reduces power consumption.

*All measured at 1080/59.94i and typical value.

Three High Quality 35mm Lenses supplied as standard

To make your entry into the world of 35mm as easy and economical as possible, the PMW-F3K comes supplied with three high quality Sony lenses (35mm, 50mm and 85mm, T2.0).

PL Mount Adapter for compatibility with 35mm Cine Lenses

The PMW-F3K is supplied with a PL Mount Adapter to provide immediate compatibility with the huge range of filmic 35mm lenses, including prime, digital cinematography and even still lenses. There are also hot shoe electric interfaces for Cooke/i and ARRI LDS.

Sony F3 Original Mount for Zoom Lens

Sony plan to introduce a range of zoom lenses directly compatible with the F3 mount. More details will be revealed shortly. Zoom lens compatibility expands the operational flexibility of the F3 so it can be used for almost any application.

23.98P Native Recording

The PMW-F3K camcorder is the first compact camcorder to be a member of the legendary Sony CineAlta™ family. It offers native 23.98P* recording which, in combination with advanced creative features such as selectable gamma curves, makes this camcorder ideal for cinema production.

*In 1440 x 1080/23.98P (SP) mode, images are handled as 23.98P and recorded as 59.94i signals through means of 2-3 pull-down.

Slow & Quick Motion function

The PMW-F3K offers a powerful 'Slow & Quick Motion' function - commonly known as over-cranking and under-cranking in film shooting - enables users to create unique 'looks' or special effects with slow -and fast- motion images. This can be selected on the control dial on the side of the camcorder.

The PMW-F3K can capture images at frame rates selectable from 1 fps (frame per second) to 60 fps in 720P mode and from 1 fps to 30 fps in 1080P mode, in increments of 1 fps, onto a single card. For example, when viewed at 23.98P, images captured at 60 fps will appear 2.5 times slower than normal. Conversely, images captured at 4 fps will appear 6 times faster than normal.

With the 'Slow & Quick Motion' function of this camcorder, images are recorded natively without interpolating the frames. This means the quality of the slow -and fast- motion images is extremely high and incomparable to those created in the editing process. In addition, these slow -and fast- motion images can be played back immediately after shooting, without using any converters or processing on nonlinear editing systems.

1920 x 1080 HD recording using the 'MPEG-2 Long GOP' codec

The PMW-F3K camcorder records 1920 x 1080 HD images using the 'MPEG-2 Long GOP' codec, which conforms to the MPEG-2 MP@HL compression standard. 'MPEG-2 Long GOP' is a mature codec - also adopted by the XDCAM HD and HDV 1080i series of products - which enables users to record stunning-quality HD footage with highly efficient, reliable data compression.

Selectable Bit Rates

The PMW-F3K camcorder offers a choice of bit rates - either 35 Mb/s (HQ mode) or 25 Mb/s (SP mode) - depending on the desired picture quality and recording time. The HQ mode supports both 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720 resolutions. The SP mode supports 1440 x 1080 resolution at 25 Mb/s, which provides compatibility with HDV 1080i products.

Multiple-format recording - 1080/720 and Interlace/Progressive switchable operation

The PMW-F3K camcorder offers a wide array of recording formats for multiple content creation applications. Scanning mode is switchable between 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 720, and 1440 x 1080 resolutions. Frame rate is also selectable from interlace and progressive - 59.94i, 50i, 29.97P, 25P, and native 23.98P*.

In addition, 59.94P and 50P progressive recording is available in 1280 x 720 mode. The SxS memory card can simultaneously hold multiple files of any of these recording formats, allowing for flexible use of the memory card.

*In 1440 x 1080/23.98P (SP) mode, images are handled as 23.98P and recorded as 59.94i signals through means of 2-3 pull-down.

Slow Shutter Function

The PMW-F3K camcorder offers a 'Slow Shutter function' for capturing clear images in low-light environments. This allows the shutter speed to be extended to a maximum of 8 frames. The 'Slow Shutter function' not only increases camera sensitivity but also produces a special blurring effect when shooting a moving object, for enhanced shooting creativity. The shutter speed is selectable from 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7- and 8-frame periods.

High-quality uncompressed audio recording

In addition to HD recording, high-quality audio is an equally significant feature in the XDCAM EX system. The PMW-F3K camcorder records and plays back high-quality, two-channel 16-bit, 48-kHz linear PCM uncompressed audio.

Exceptional workflow flexibility

The PMW-F3K uses XDCAM EX’s proven high-speed, intuitive workflow offering seamless integration with leading nonlinear editing software. In addition, 10bit 4:2:2 HD-SDI output opens up hybrid recording possibilities with content simultaneously recorded on internal memory and, in uncompressed form, on a variety of external recording devices.

From April 2011, a Dual Link HD-SDI option will enable 10bit RGB 23.98/25/29.97PsF or 10 bit 4:2:2 108050P/59.94P uncompressed external recording – ideal for integration with highest quality production workflows such as HDCAM SR. The PMW-F3K also supports selectable Gamma, four levels of HyperGamma and S-Log for a wide range of shooting conditions from standard to wide latitude. The PMW-F3K can simultaneously record LUT (Look Up Table) information onto the internal media for additional workflow flexibility.

3G-SDI is available for 10bit RGB 1080 23.98/25/29.97PsF or 10bit 4:2:2 1080 50/59.94P output.

SxS Memory Cards combine high transfer speeds and high reliability

Both SxS PRO™ and SxS-1A™* memory cards use the PCI Express interface to achieve an extremely high data-transfer speed of 800 Mbps - 1.2Gbps, and can resist considerable shock (1500 G) and vibration (15 G). Also, a unique 'Salvage function' serves to restore content damaged by power loss or memory disconnection during recording**.

In addition, with an optional MEAD-MS01 or MEAD-SD01 Media Adaptor***, a high-speed Memory Stick™ or SD memory card**** can be used as emergency or alternative recording media.

Long recording time

Utilising a mature and highly efficient compression format together with high performance SxS memory cards, the PMW-F3K can record superb quality HD images for an exceptional 140 minutes* on a single 32Gb update SxS card. As the PMW-F3K features two memory card slots, this recording time is easily doubled to 280 minutes (with two 32Gb cards) and when recording across two cards, the transition is seamless without any frame loss.

*When recording in HQ (35 Mb/s) mode, recording time may be more than the above specified figure depending on the actual bit rate that is adopted during VBR encoding.

IT Friendly

The PMW-F3K is part of Sony’s highly successful XDCAM EX product family which supports a high speed nonlinear workflow. With XDCAM EX, recordings are made as data files in the "MP4" format, which is widely used in a number of recent electronic portable devices and has been standardised by ISO.

File-based recording allows material to be handled with great flexibility in an IT-based environment - easily available for copying, transferring, sharing, and archiving. All these operations are accomplished without any 'digitising' process required.

File-based data copying allows for degradation-free dubbing of footage, which can be performed easily on a PC. The file-based recording system also allows for material to be viewed directly on a PC - simply by inserting the SxS memory card into the ExpressCard slot on a PC or Mac, or by linking a PC/Mac to the XDCAM EX unit via a USB2 connection. This works in just the same way as a PC reading files on an external drive. The file-based operation can dramatically improve the efficiency and quality of your workflow.

Immediate recording start and no overwriting footage

By virtue of recording on flash memory card, the PMW-F3K can start recording virtually the instant the camcorder is turned on. Moreover, the PMW-F3K automatically records on an empty area of the card - there's no danger of overwriting existing content.

This is extremely convenient, as camera operators do not have to worry about accidentally recording over good takes, and they don't have to search through footage for the correct position to start the next recording. In short, it means the camera is always ready for the next shot!

Instant-access thumbnail search with 'Expand' function

Each time a recording is started and stopped on the PMW-F3K camcorder, the content is recorded as a single clip. During playback, users can cue-up to the next or previous clip simply by pressing the 'Next' or 'Previous' button, as you would do on a CD or DVD player.

Furthermore, thumbnails are automatically generated for each clip as a visual reference, allowing operators to cue-up to a desired scene simply by guiding the cursor to a thumbnail and pressing the 'Play' button.

The 'Expand' function allows one selected clip in the thumbnail display to be divided into 12 even-time intervals, each with their own thumbnail identifier. This is useful if you want to quickly search for a particular scene within a lengthy clip.

3.5-inch* Hybrid Colour LCD Screen / Viewfinder as per EX1R

The PMW-F3K is equipped with a newly developed, easy-to-view, colour LCD screen with a high resolution of 1920 x 480 pixels. The LCD screen is located in an easy viewing position on the side of the camera.

The LCD Screen can also be used to instantly review recorded footage, as well as access the camera's set-up menus and view thumbnail display status indications such as audio meters, depth-of-field indicators, and the remaining memory and battery time. What's more, the Hybrid LCD screen - which comprises transmissive and reflective panels - offers clear viewing even in bright sunlight.

*Viewable area measured diagonally.

Genlock and Timecode Interfaces

The PMW-F3K includes genlock and timecode interfaces, making it ideal for multi-camera operation and entry level HD studio use.

3D System Link option*

Using this option you can easily synchronise timecode, genlock and control functionality with a single cable, locking together left and right cameras to simplify 3D acquisition. *Available from April 2011.

Remote control capability

The PMW-F3K offers professional remote control of various camera features via standard Sony 8-pin control interface. This allows use of Sony optional RM-B150 and RM-B750 remote control units offering increased flexibility for studio/location use.

Compact design

The PMW-F3K has a chassis built around its Super 35mm CMOS sensor. Its lightweight, compact design provides exceptional flexibility when shooting, particularly as a B-camera. It also offers a 'best of both worlds' combination of compatibility with 35mm lenses via a PL Mount adaptor, plus support for a huge range of other Sony and third-party digital cinematography accessories.

Low power consumption

Sony’s chip design expertise means the PMW-F3K operates with exceptional efficiency with an average power consumption of 24W. This makes the camera more reliable, extends its battery operating time and is also environmentally conscious. With the optional BP-U60 battery attached, the PMW-F3K can record continuously for just under three hours (with dual-link option off).

Wide array of interfaces

The PMW-F3K camcorder comes equipped with a wide range of interfaces optimised for a variety of operational needs. These include dual HD-SDI output, down-converted SD-SDI output, i.LINK (HDV) input/output, USB2 and analogue composite output.

Additional Information

Only SxS memory cards are guaranteed for use with the PMW-F3K XDCAM EX cmcorder. USB based memory cards cannot be used with the XDCAM EX range. USB based memory cards might work with the XDCAM EX range in some cases, but Sony does not guarantee that all the functions will operate. The performance of USB based memory cards can vary.

The supplied SEL18200 (E 18–200mm F3.5–6.3 OSS) with the NEX-FS100K boasts 11x zoom power, a quiet AF motor for cleaner sound recording, and Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilisation with an advanced Active mode that lets you take steady handheld shots while walking around — even without a bulky stabilisation rig. An ultra-compact SEL16F28 wide-angle lens and SEL1855 3x zoom lens are also available.

Sony PMW-F3L Super 35mm Full-HD Compact Camcorder with PL Mount Adapter

Sony’s Exmor™ Super35 CMOS sensor was designed with the benefit of two decades experience in Digital Cinematography, pioneering digital HD acquisition for feature films and broadcast TV through the legendary CineAlta product range. PrimeSupport

This product comes with PrimeSupport – fast, hassle-free repairs and a helpline offering expert technical advice. Which gives you the peace of mind that Sony is looking after your equipment, and your business.

Exmor™ Super35 CMOS image sensor

The PMW-F3L is equipped with a Super 35mm sensor which is the same size as Super 35mm film and has been specifically developed for digital cinematography.

PL Mount Adapter for compatibility with 35mm Cine Lenses

The PMW-F3L is supplied with a PL Mount Adapter to provide immediate compatibility with the huge range of filmic 35mm lenses, including prime, digital cinematography and even still lenses. There are also hot shoe electric interfaces for Cooke/i and ARRI LDS.

Sony F3 Original Mount for Zoom Lens

23.98P Native Recording

The PMW-F3L camcorder is the first compact camcorder to be a member of the legendary Sony CineAlta™ family.

The PMW-F3L offers a powerful 'Slow & Quick Motion' function - commonly known as over-cranking and under-cranking in film shooting. This enables users to create unique 'looks' or special effects with slow- and fast-motion images, and can be selected on the control dial on the side of the camcorder.

The PMW-F3L can capture images at frame rates selectable from 1 fps (frame per second) to 60 fps in 720P mode and from 1 fps to 30 fps in 1080P mode, in increments of 1 fps, onto a single card.

1920 x 1080 HD recording using the "MPEG-2 Long GOP" Codec

The PMW-F3L camcorder records 1920 x 1080 HD images using the 'MPEG-2 Long GOP' codec, which conforms to the MPEG-2 MP@HL compression standard. 'MPEG-2 Long GOP' is a mature codec - also adopted by the XDCAM HD and HDV 1080i series of products - which enables users to record stunning quality HD footage with highly efficient, reliable data compression.

Selectable Bit Rates

The PMW-F3L camcorder offers a choice of bit rates - either 35 Mb/s (HQ mode) or 25 Mb/s (SP mode) - depending on the desired picture quality and recording time.

The PMW-F3L camcorder offers a wide array of recording formats for multiple content creation applications.

The PMW-F3L camcorder offers a 'Slow Shutter function' for capturing clear images in low-light environments.

The PMW-F3L camcorder records and plays back high-quality, two-channel 16-bit, 48-kHz linear PCM uncompressed audio.

Exceptional workflow flexibility

The PMW-F3L uses XDCAM EX’s proven high-speed, intuitive workflow and offers seamless integration with leading nonlinear editing software.

The PMW-F3L also supports selectable Gamma, four levels of HyperGamma and S-Log for a wide range of shooting conditions from standard to wide latitude. The PMW-F3L can simultaneously record LUT (Look Up Table) information onto the internal media for additional workflow flexibility.

* SxS-1A memory cards support fewer re-writes than SxS PRO™ memory cards. Notification is given when an SxS-1 memory card approaches its end of life.

** In some cases, images recorded just before an accident may not be restored (several seconds). No warranty is given on always achieving content restoration.

*** Slow Motion and the Salvage function are not supported.

**** For information about memory devices, please contact your nearest Sony Specialist Dealer.

Utilising a mature and highly efficient compression format together with high performance SxS memory cards, the PMW-F3L can record superb quality HD images for an exceptional 140 minutes* on a single 32Gb update SxS card. As the PMW-F3L features two memory card slots, this recording time is easily doubled to 280 minutes (with two 32Gb cards) and when recording across two cards, the transition is seamless without any frame loss.

*When recording in HQ (35 Mb/s) mode, recording time may be more than the above specified figure depending on the actual bit rate that is adopted during VBR encoding.

IT Friendly

The PMW-F3L is part of Sony’s highly successful XDCAM EX product family which supports a high speed nonlinear workflow. With XDCAM EX, recordings are made as data files in the 'MP4' format, which is widely used in a number of recent electronic portable devices and has been standardised by ISO.

By virtue of recording on flash memory card, the PMW-F3L can start recording virtually the instant the camcorder is turned on. Moreover, the PMW-F3L automatically records on an empty area of the card - there's no danger of overwriting existing content.

This is extremely convenient, as camera operators do not have to worry about accidentally recording over good takes, and they don't have to search through footage for the correct position to start the next recording. In short, it means the camera is always ready for the next shot!

Instant-access thumbnail search with 'Expand' function

Each time a recording is started and stopped on the PMW-F3L camcorder, the content is recorded as a single clip.

The PMW-F3L is equipped with a newly developed, easy-to-view, colour LCD screen with a high resolution of 1920 x 480 pixels. The LCD screen is located in an easy viewing position on the side of the camera.

The LCD Screen can also be used to instantly review recorded footage, as well as to access the camera's set-up menus and view thumbnail display status indications such as audio meters, depth-of-field indicators, and the remaining memory and battery time. What's more, the Hybrid LCD screen - which comprises transmissive and reflective panels - offers clear viewing even in bright sunlight.

*Viewable area measured diagonally.

Genlock and Timecode Interfaces

The PMW-F3L includes genlock and timecode interfaces, making it ideal for multi-camera operation and entry level HD studio use.

3D System Link Option*

Using this option you can easily synchronise timecode, genlock and control functionality with a single cable, locking together left and right cameras to simplify 3D acquisition. *Available from April 2011.

Remote Control Capability

The PMW-F3L offers professional remote control of various camera features via standard Sony 8-pin control interface. This allows use of Sony optional RM-B150 and RM-B750 remote control units offering increased flexibility for studio/location use.

Compact Design

The PMW-F3L has a chassis built around its Super 35mm CMOS sensor.

Sony’s chip design expertise means the PMW-F3L operates with exceptional efficiency with an average power consumption of 24W. This makes the camera more reliable, extends its battery operating time and is also environmentally conscious. With the optional BP-U60 battery attached, the PMW-F3L can record continuously for just under three hours (with dual-link option off).

Wide array of interfaces

The PMW-F3L camcorder comes equipped with a wide range of interfaces optimised for a variety of operational needs. These include dual HD-SDI output, down-converted SD-SDI output, i.LINK (HDV) input/output, USB2 and analogue composite output.

Additional Information

Only SxS memory cards are guaranteed for use with the PMW-F3L XDCAM EX cmcorder. USB based memory cards cannot be used with the XDCAM EX range. USB based memory cards might work with the XDCAM EX range in some cases, but Sony does not guarantee that all the functions will operate. The performance of USB based memory cards can vary.

Capture high quality HD to CF cards
The XF305 records MPEG-2 MXF (Media eXchange Format) files – up to 1920 x 1080 Full HD at 50Mbps (4:2:2) – to CompactFlash (CF) memory cards. CF media is inexpensive and widely available: dual card slots allow filming to continue without interruption.

Flexible editing
Integrating seamlessly with existing workflows, movies shot on the XF305 are captured as industry-standard MXF files compatible with all major editing packages.

18x wide-angle lens
Drawing on Canon’s broadcast lens expertise – and informed by the feedback of professionals – the lightweight 18x L-series HD Video Lens delivers superb optical quality. Unique Ultra-Low Dispersion (Hi-UD) elements are used to prevent chromatic aberration. Separate rings offer independent control of Focus, Zoom and Iris (F1.6) – with full manual control available, end stops are provided for the focus and zoom rings.

3x Full HD CMOS
Full HD at 1920 x 1080 resolution is captured via three 1/3 type 2.07 Megapixel Full HD CMOS sensors – designed and manufactured by Canon in-house. High speed scanning minimises the effects of a rolling shutter.

10.1 cm LCD and 1.3 cm EVF
The 10.1 cm (4”) LCD screen can be positioned either side of the camera. Offering superior resolution (1.2M dots), the Focus Assist tool helps achieve sharp images. A built-in Waveform Monitor (WFM) helps verify exposure and other shooting parameters. Alternatively, a 1.3 cm (0.52”) Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) is available.

Variable frame rate
A wide range of frame rates is available, from 12 to 50 fps. This gives cameramen the freedom to alter the capture rate for additional creative flexibility.

Professional jackpack and independent audio
HD-SDI output is the industry standard, outputting uncompressed Full HD with embedded audio and Timecode. Genlock In and Timecode In/Out allow the XF305 to be used in a multi-camera shoot. Audio can be captured via twin XLR inputs and also with the front-mounted stereo microphone.

Custom pictures
Twenty-six Custom Picture options can be adjusted to achieve the perfect look. These can be stored in-camera – via SD card - and settings can even be transferred between camcorders.

CPS support *
Canon’s exclusive CPS Video Support offers a priority repair service, guaranteeing quick turnaround.

The XF105 records MPEG-2 MXF (Media eXchange Format) files – up to 1920 x 1080 Full HD at 50Mbps (4:2:2) – to relatively inexpensive and widely available CompactFlash (CF) memory cards. HD-SDI, Timecode, Genlock; 3D Assist Functions
HD-SDI output is the industry standard, outputting uncompressed Full HD with embedded audio and Timecode. A combined Genlock In and Timecode In/Out terminal allows the XF105 to be used in a multi-camera shoot. Genlock and 3D Shooting Assist functions (OIS Axis Shift and Focal Length Guide) support stereoscopic 3D video capture using two camcorders.
The HVR-Z7E can switch between HDV1080i, DVCAM, and DV recording, providing full flexibility to record in either standard definition or high definition depending on your production needs
Built-in Down-converter for SD Production The HVR-Z7E can convert material from 1080i down to 576i, and output the video signals through its i.LINK interface and other SD output connectors.
This allows users to edit recorded material with a compatible nonlinear editing system using current DV editing software, as well as record SD signals to an external VTR.
1/3-inch type 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor System The newly developed 1/3-inch type 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor™ system has 45-degree rotated pixels on each chip in order to increase the signal density, while each pixel maintains sufficient surface area.
In combination with Enhanced Imaging Processor™ (EIP), the 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system achieves high resolution, high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, and excellent colour reproduction.
The pixel shift interpolation technique has been traditionally used in low-end 3CCD camcorders. However, it normally requires the combination of all three colour element (RGB) signals to maximize resolution. If an object lacks one or more colour elements, the resolution of the object may be degraded.
The 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system is different. It can always produce maximum resolution, regardless of the balance between colour elements, thanks to its unique and sophisticated interpolation technology.
Enhanced Functionality via the Technology of "Exmor
The HVR-Z7E offers cutting-edge features, such as the technology of "Exmor™" developed by Sony, which utilizes the full potential of the 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system.
Multiple A/D (analog to digital) converters on each pixel row convert analog signals to digital as soon as they are generated, unlike traditional technology that only has one A/D converter on each chip. The technology of "Exmor" can eliminate the influence of external noise that enters the signal chain during transfer to the A/D converter, resulting in high-quality digital signals with extremely low noise. This significantly enhances shooting in low-light environments.
By adopting this groundbreaking technology, the new 1/3-inch 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system enables the HVR-Z7E to achieve a low light sensitivity of just 1.5 lux.
This will be of extreme importance to customers who shoot in lighting conditions that they can't control, e.g. wedding videographers.
Wide Range of Lenses The flexible bayonet lens attachment system allows you to use a wide range of lenses.
Standard 1/3-inch HD video lenses, from manufacturers such as Fujinon and Canon, can be attached directly to the HVR-Z7E.
If you'd like to attach a 2/3-inch or 1/2-inch HD video lens on to the HVR-Z7E, it is possible to do so by adding a standard lens adaptor from the lens manufacturer. The HVR-Z7E camcorder has 12-pin lens connectors allowing compatibility with professional ENG lenses.
This feature is very useful not only for those who already have these professional HD video lenses, but also for those who prefer to use HD digital cinema lenses for their unique contrast, colour, and atmosphere.
Carl Zeiss Lens for HD Video as Standard A high-quality, multi-purpose Carl Zeiss lens for HD video comes as standard with the HVR-S270E and HVR-Z7E. Stunning resolution and contrast is achieved thanks to the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar™ T* coating, which suppresses unwanted reflections. A specially designed wide-angle lens is also available as an option, to suit a diverse range of shooting requirements.
Alpha Lens Compatibility With a special adaptor from Sony, it is also possible to use the Alpha lens series designed for Sony Digital SLR still cameras. By using Alpha lenses in various configurations, creative effects can be achieved. This approach is ideal for filmmakers on a budget or those who already own Alpha lenses.
25p HDV Native Progressive Recording Modes The HVR-Z7E newly features 25p HDV native progressive recording modes.
The 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system and EIP create true 1080p images, which can then be recorded as progressive signals by the HVR-Z7E in HDV format.
The progressive HDV stream can be output from an i.LINK connector and used for progressive editing with compatible NLE software.
Native progressive recording modes are suitable for output to film, CG composition, viewing on a progressive monitor, or as an Internet movie.
Note: interlaced video is output from connectors other than i.LINK
25p Progressive Scan Modes In these modes, the 1080p image captured by the 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system is also recorded as an interlaced signal by dividing each frame into two fields. This enables compatibility with current editing and monitoring equipment that only accept interlace signals, while maintaining the quality of the 1080p image.
Progressive scan modes are suitable for feature films, documentaries, and music videos, which have to be recorded as interlaced video for viewing on interlaced monitors, but want to offer a "progressive look" to their motion.
A streamlined nonlinear editing workflow for HDV
HDV signals can be recorded as a file on non-tape media. For example, when using the supplied CompactFlash (CF) solid-state memory recording unit - images can be stored on a standard CF card for quick nonlinear editing. The optional HVR-DR60 Hard Disk Recording Unit can be used in the same manner, with images being recorded on to its large-capacity 60GB hard drive, which provides 4.5 hours of recording time.

Three 2/3-inch type Exmor™ CMOS Sensors

The PMW-350 is equipped with three newly developed 2/3-inch type Exmor™ CMOS Sensors, each with an effective pixel count of 1920 (H) x 1080 (V). These deliver superior picture performance with full-HD resolution. This 2/3-inch-type image sensor allows the camcorder to provide an excellent sensitivity of F12 in 60Hz mode (F13 in 50Hz), a remarkable signal-to-noise ratio of 59 dB, and a high horizontal resolution of 1000 TV lines*. In addition, the large 2/3-inch-type image sensors can capture images with a shallower depth of field, giving users more freedom of creative expression.

What's more, the Exmor CMOS sensor is a unique design that deploys an A/D converter to each column of pixels, resulting in a much lower clock speed than conventional CMOS sensors. This makes it possible to greatly reduce power consumption of the camcorder.

*In 1920 x 1080/59.94i mode

1920 x 1080 HD Recording Using the "MPEG-2 Long GOP" Codec

The PMW-350 camcorder records 1920 x 1080 HD images using the "MPEG-2 Long GOP" codec, which conforms to the MPEG-2 MP@HL compression standard. "MPEG-2 Long GOP" is a mature codec - also adopted by the XDCAM HD and HDV 1080i series of products - which enables users to record stunning-quality HD video and audio with highly efficient, reliable data compression.

Selectable Recording Modes including DVCAM Recording

The PMW-350 camcorder offers a choice of bit rates - either 35 Mb/s (HQ mode) or 25 Mb/s (SP mode) - depending on the desired picture quality and recording time. The HQ mode supports 1920 x 1080, 1440 x 1080 and 1280 x 720 resolutions. The 1440 x 1080 mode is new to the PMW-350 ensuring native integration of XDCAM EX footage into a XDCAM HD Professional Disc workflow. By supporting 1440 x 1080, 35Mb/s recording, material can be utilised with no transcode, just a re-wrap to MXF for NLE and archiving.

The SP mode supports 1440 x 1080 resolution at 25 Mb/s, which provides compatibility with HDV 1080i products. Footage recorded in this SP mode can be seamlessly integrated into HDV-compatible editing systems by transferring the stream from the camcorder via the i.LINK™ (HDV™) interface.

The PMW-350 also supports 25Mb/s DVCAM recording in either PAL or NTSC modes, again providing seamless integration into existing DVCAM workflows offering ultimate flexibility worldwide. (SD DVCAM Recording and Playback requires Optional Hardware Key, CBK-DV01.)

New Nonlinear Recording Media, "SxS PRO" - For Greater Efficiency, Operability, and Reliability

The XDCAM EX series adopts high-speed SxS PRO and SxS-1 memory cards for its recording media, developed specifically for professional content creation applications with a number of key features:

1. Compatible with ExpressCard/34 interface slot which is common on modern Windows PCs and Macs

2. Uses PCI Express interface and achieves an extremely high "read" speed of 800 Mb/s*

3. Large storage capacity: SBP-16 (16 GB) and SBP-32 (32 GB) memory cards are available. One SBP-16 (16 GB) memory card is supplied with the PMW-EX1R

4. Can record up to 140 minutes of HD video and audio (using one 32-GB memory card)

5. Compact size: approx. 75 × 34 × 5 mm (excluding the projecting parts) - half the size of the older PC Card standard

6. Low power consumption

7. Highly reliable: can resist shocks (up to 1500 G) and vibrations (up to 15 G)

8. Affordability: SxS-1 media (introduced in late 2009) provides users with a lower cost alternative to SxS PRO media that offers the same high performance, but with an estimated 5-year life span when recording at full capacity once per day. Users can check the card life on their PMW-EX1R and PMW-350 camcorders and even see an alarm when the data rewriting limit is reached.

*This data-transfer speed is a theoretical value. Actual data-transfer speed depends on the file type and the performance of the PC.

Long Recording Time

Utilising a mature and highly efficient compression format together with high performance SxS memory cards, the PMW-350 can record superb quality HD images for an exceptional 140 minutes* on a single 16GB SxS card. As the PMW-350 features two memory card slots, this recording time is easily increased to 280 minutes (with two 32GB cards) and when recording across two cards, the transition is seamless without any frame loss. This feature makes the PMW-350 an ideal camcorder for a wide variety of content production applications, including documentary and event shooting, that require a long recording time.

*When recording in HQ (35 Mb/s) mode, recording time may be more than the above specified figure depending on the actual bit rate that is adopted during VBR encoding.

Multiple-format Recording - 1080/720, PAL/NTSC and Interlace/Progressive Switchable Operation

The PMW-350 camcorder offers a wide array of recording formats for multiple content creation applications.

In SD mode, both 50/60i and 25P/30P modes are supported (SD mode requires optional CBK-DV01 accessory).

*In 1440 x 1080/23.98P (SP) mode, images are handled as 23.98P and recorded as 59.94i signals through means of 2-3 pull-down.

Four-channel Audio

The PMW-350 is the first XDCAM EX camcorder to record four channels of 16-bit, 48-kHz, linear PCM uncompressed audio. Each channel level can be controlled by an independent individual level controller. (When an SxS memory card with four-channel audio is replayed by the PMW-EX1, PMW-EX1R, PMW-EX3, or PMW-EX30, only CH-1/2 or CH-3/4 can be replayed.)

Wide Choice of Optional Microphones

Although the PMW-350 is equipped with a shotgun microphone, three optional microphones – the ECM-680S, ECM-678, and ECM-673 – are also available. As well as the supplied microphone, the ECM-680S can operate in either Stereo or Monaural (Uni-directional) mode. These modes can be selected from the switch on the microphone or from the PMW-350 itself.

The camcorder is also equipped with a slot to accommodate a DWR-S01D digital wireless microphone receiver, which provides two-channel audio with stable and secure transmission. The WRR-855 Series microphone receiver can also be used in this slot.

IT Friendly

With the XDCAM EX series, recordings are made as data files in the "MP4" format, which is widely used in a number of recent electronic portable devices and has been standardized by ISO.

The file-based recording allows material to be handled with great flexibility in an IT-based environment - easily available for copying, transferring, sharing, and archiving. All these operations are accomplished without any "digitising" process required.

File-based data copying allows for degradation-free dubbing of AV content, which can be performed easily on a PC. The file-based operation can dramatically improve the efficiency and quality of professional video applications.

Immediate Recording Start and No Overwriting Footage

By virtue of recording on flash memory card, the XDCAM EX can start recording virtually the instant the camcorder is turned on. Moreover, the XDCAM EX system automatically records on an empty area of the card - there's no danger of overwriting existing content.

This is extremely convenient, as camera operators do not have to worry about accidentally recording over good takes, and they don't have to search through footage for the correct position to start the next recording. In short, it means the camera is always ready for the next shot!

Instant-access Thumbnail Search with "Expand" Function

Each time a recording is started and stopped on the XDCAM EX camcorder, the video and audio signals are recorded as one clip.

For further convenience, the 'Expand' function allows one selected clip in the Thumbnail display to be divided into 12 even-time intervals, each with their own thumbnail identifier. This is useful if you want to quickly search for a particular scene within a lengthy clip. * In HD-SDI, HQ 1080 mode.

Lens Package Choice

There are two different models of the PMW-350. One is the PMW-350K, which comes equipped with a Fujinon HD lens with 16x zoom. The other is the PMW-350L, which comes without a lens. Both models have a standard 2/3-inch bayonet lens interface, and the user can choose from wide variety of optional lenses in the existing 2/3-inch HD lens line-up.

Unique Focus Operation - Professional Manual Focus and Auto Focus

The supplied lens for the PMW-350K adopts a unique focus ring mechanism, which offers two types of manual focus, plus an auto focus operation. The lens is equipped with two independent focus wheel mechanisms, which can be switched by sliding the focus ring itself back and forth.

When the focus ring is in the front position, the lens works in the same way as a typical auto focus lens on a handheld camcorder. In this case, either manual or auto focus mode can be selected by the AF/MF switch on the lens. On the other hand, when the focus ring is set to the back position, the lens has an absolute focus position, and works in the same way as interchangeable-lens cameras, which professional users are familiar with.

Three Independent Rings

In addition to the unique focus ring, the PMW-350K’s supplied lens is equipped with independent rings for zoom and iris adjustment. These are located adjacent to the focus ring, in the same layout as is common on shoulder-type camcorders. This gives users a high level of operational comfort and control.

AF Assist

The AF (Auto Focus) Assist function enables operators to manually change focus positions using the focus ring during AF mode. This means that AF reference focus positions can be shifted to manually changed positions.

MF Assist

The MF (Manual Focus) Assist function helps to precisely focus on the target subject when shooting in MF mode. When the MF Assist is turned on, auto focus is momentarily activated and finely focuses on the subject closest to the focal point of the lens at that time.

One-push Auto Iris

A One-push Auto Iris button allows the user to go into Auto Iris mode only when this button is pushed.

Expanded Focus

At the touch of a button, the center of the screen on the viewfinder can be magnified to about twice normal size, making it easier to confirm focus settings during manual focusing. When the switch is released, the center of the screen goes back to normal size.

Selectable Peaking

The Peaking function can help operators to adjust the camera's focus more accurately by altering the way pictures are displayed on tviewfinder. It can enhance the outline of the image, which the camera focuses on most, and change its colour to make it more visible. Enhance levels can be selected from a choice of "HIGH", "MIDDLE", and "LOW", and the outline colour from "RED", "WHITE", "YELLOW", and "BLUE".

ALAC (Automatic Lens Aberration Compensation)

This feature decreases any chromatic aberration caused by the lens, which is active only with the PMW-350K’s supplied lens and with certain third-party lenses that incorporate compensation data. Please check with your lens supplier for ALAC support.

Optical ND Filters and Electrical CC Filters

The PMW-350 camcorder comes equipped with optical ND (Neutral Density) filters and electrical CC (Colour Correction) filters. The optical ND filters are controlled via a built-in ND filter wheel -- Clear, 1/4ND, 1/16ND, and 1/64ND. And with the electrical CC filters, users can easily obtain the desired colour temperature by setting the mode – 3200K/4300K/5600K/6300K – on a camcorder-assignable switch. Users can select the four values cyclically, or choose one preset value. This is also available via an assignable switch. This is useful when a sudden change occurs during shooting, and a quick and direct setting is required.

23.98P Native Recording

All XDCAM EX Camcorders are part of the legendary Sony CineAlta™ family and offer native 23.98P* recording which, in combination with advanced creative features such as selectable gamma curves, makes these camcorders ideal for cinema production.

*In 1440 x 1080/23.98P (SP) mode, images are handled as 23.98P and recorded as 59.94i signals via a 2-3 pull-down. .

Slow & Quick Motion Function

The PMW-350 offers a powerful Slow & Quick Motion function - commonly known as over-cranking and under-cranking in film shooting - that enables users to create unique 'looks' or special effects with slow- and fast-motion images.

The PMW-350 can capture images at frame rates selectable from 1 fps (frame per second) to 60 fps in 720P mode and from 1 fps to 30 fps in 1080P mode, in increments of 1 fps. For example, when viewed at 23.98P, images captured at 60 fps will appear 2.5 times slower than normal. Conversely, images captured at four fps will appear six times faster than normal.

With the Slow & Quick Motion function of this camcorder, images are recorded natively without interpolating the frames. This means the quality of the slow- and fast-motion images is extremely high and incomparable to those created in the editing process. In addition, these slow- and quick-motion images can be played back immediately after shooting, without using any converters or processing on nonlinear editing systems.

Image Inversion Function

When a cinema-style lens or stills camera lens is attached to the camera with a DOF (Depth of Field) adaptor, the image is rotated 180 degrees. Image Inversion is the function that normalises the image by reverse scanning.

Slow Shutter Function

The PMW-350 camcorder offers a Slow Shutter function for capturing clear images in low-light environments. This allows the shutter speed to be extended to a maximum of 64 frames. The Slow Shutter function not only increases camera sensitivity but also produces a special blurring effect when shooting a moving object, for enhanced shooting creativity. The shutter speed is selectable from 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, 8-, 16-, 32-, and 64-frame periods.

Selectable Gamma Curves

The PMW-350 camcorder offers a wide variety of gamma curves to flexibly handle contrast and give a specific 'look' to an image. In addition to six types of standard gamma curves, there are four types of Hyper Gamma which are identical to those on high-end CineAlta camcorders. Operators can select the best-suited preset gamma curve, depending on scenes.

Cache Recording Function

Once enabled, Cache Recording continuously streams audio and video through the camcorder’s internal memory. Once the Record button is pushed, the content buffered in the camcorder’s memory is recorded onto the memory media at the start of the recording clip. The caching period can be adjusted by menu setting up to 15 seconds, so in a situation such as monitoring a developing situation, Cache Record enables capturing an event up to 15 seconds before the record button is pressed.

Interval Recording Function

The PMW-350 camcorder offers an Interval Recording function that records signals at pre-determined intervals. This is convenient for shooting over long periods of time, and also when creating pictures with special effects of extremely quick motion.

Frame Recording Function

Frame Recording is a special feature of all XDCAM EX camcorders that is especially useful for stop-motion/clay animation shooting. Using this function, images for pre-determined frames are recorded every time the Record button is pressed.

Shutter Angle Settings

In addition to the electronic shutter speed controls, the PMW-350 also has a "shutter angle" control - which is familiar to film users. By setting the shutter speed to "angle", the PMW-350 automatically operates with the proper exposure time, determined by the selected frame rate and the shutter angle.

Total Level Control System (TLCS)

By activating TLCS, the correct exposure is automatically set_for normal, dark, and very bright shooting environments by controlling the lens iris, electronic shutter, and Auto Gain Control.

Scene File System

The Scene File feature of the PMW-350 allows camera operators to easily call up customised picture-tonal settings – such as the parameters of matrix, colour correction, detail, gamma, and knee – to suit particular shooting conditions, rather than having to readjust the camera each time. This gives users greater operational efficiency. SxS memory cards can be used for storing and loading scene files.

Turbo Gain

The Turbo Gain function can boost the camera gain up to +42 dB, which helps reproduce images in very low-light environments.

Camera Metadata (HD Format Only)

The camera setting data such as iris, focus, zoom, macro, capture fps, shutter, gain, white balance, and gamma are recorded as acquisition metadata for future utilities.

Viewfinder with 3.5-inch* Colour LCD

The PMW-350 is equipped with a large, easy-to-view, colour LCD with a high resolution of 1920 x 480 pixels, which simplifies focusing. The viewfinder can also be used to instantly review recorded footage, as well as access the camera's set-up menus, view thumbnails, and display status indications.

When the elbow block is opened up, the screen can be monitored directly, while menu setting and thumbnails are easily accessed using switches on the inside panel. The PMW-350 also has an interface for the DXF-20W and DXF-51 Viewfinders

*Viewable area measured diagonally.

** The supplied viewfinder and DXF viewfinder cannot be used concurrently.

Depth-of-field Indicator

A Depth-of-field Indicator can be displayed on the LCD monitor and viewfinder to help camera operators easily recognize the depth-of-field of a scene, and thereby produce their desired images.

Brightness-level Display

The average brightness level of the centre of a frame can be displayed on the LCD monitor and viewfinder as a percentage. This is useful when a waveform monitor is not available for shooting.

Histogram Indicator

The Histogram Indicator can be displayed on the LCD monitor and viewfinder, allowing operators to easily evaluate the distribution of brightness on currently captured images. This enables proper exposure control of iris, gain and gamma.

Six Assignable Buttons for Quick Access to Desired Functions

Frequently used functions can be programmed to six assignable buttons on the PMW-350, allowing operators to make rapid changes when working in the field. The colour temperature button and lens RET button also can be utilised as additional assignable buttons.

Adjustable Shoulder Pad

The position of the shoulder pad can be adjusted – either forwards or backwards – to provide users with optimum weight balance. This is particularly useful when the camera is docked with a different lens or camera adaptor. In addition, no tools are required for this adjustment. For those who prefer a soft shoulder pad, there is the optional CBK-SP01.

ATW & Hold

The ATW (Auto Tracing White Balance) function of the PMW-350 automatically adjusts the camera’s colour temperature according to changes in the lighting conditions. This function is useful when recording outside for long periods, and the lighting changes gradually over time. The PMW-EX1R also has an ATW Hold function, which allows the operator to hold auto tracing at a desired colour balance via an assignable switch.

Wide Array of Interfaces

The PMW-350 camcorder comes equipped with a wide range of interfaces optimised for a variety of operational needs. These include an HD-SDI output, down-converted SD-SDI output, i.LINK (HDV 1080i and DVCAM stream) input/output, USB2 and analogue composite output. Timecode In/Out and Genlock in are also supported. A HDMI output (Type A) allows the user to show the picture on a consumer display or professional monitor equipped with an HDMI input. Non-compressed video and two channels of audio can be output. When HDMI output is selected, other outputs are not available.

Digital Extender function

For future expandability, the PMW-350 has a 50-pin interface option (available Autumn 2010), which offers a Digital Extender function digitally doubling images in size. Unlike lens extenders, the Digital Extender function performs this doubling without any loss of image sensitivity, often referred to as the F-drop phenomenon.

Affordable MPEG TS Option for Field and Satellite Transmission

The HDCA-702 MPEG TS adaptor, which can be directly docked onto the PMW-350, transmits an MPEG Transport Stream (TS) of MPEG via a DVB-ASI output. This can be done simultaneously as the PMW-350 records onto SxS memory card. This function is also available using the 50-pin interface option (which will be available in Autumn 2010).

Camera Remote Control

A Sony 8-pin remote interface is supplied with the PMW-350. Various camera settings can be remotely controlled using an optional RM-B150 RM-B750, RCP-750, RCP-751, RCP-920, or RCP-921 Remote Control Unit via its 8-pin remote connector (please note not all controls on the remote control units are supported by the PMW-350). Composite output is always available for monitoring purposes, regardless of HD/SD output selection.

Other Features

1 High-speed picture search: x4, x15

2 Freeze Mix function

3 Skin-tone Detail control

4 Low-key saturation

Additional Information

Only SxS PRO and SxS-1 are guaranteed for use with XDCAM EX Camcorders. Sony HX Series Memory Stick are supported with MEAD-MS01 Adaptor for certain functions (please see accessory page for details). USB based memory cards might work with the XDCAM EX range in some cases, but Sony does not guarantee that all the functions will operate. The performance of USB based memory cards can vary
